Strengthening Resilience with the Climate-Peace Nexus in Northeast Syria

The “Strengthening Resilience with the Climate-Peace Nexus in Northeast Syria” project is a transformative initiative implemented in Deir Ez Zour and Hassakeh from October 2023 to October 2026. Rooted in the Climate-Peace Nexus approach, the project recognises the deep connection between climate change, environmental challenges, livelihoods, and social stability, while supporting communities to rebuild stronger, more resilient futures. In Northeast Syria, years of crisis, drought, damaged infrastructure, and limited access to essential services have placed immense pressure on communities, particularly women, children, internally displaced people, and people with disabilities. Despite these challenges, communities continue to demonstrate resilience, determination, and the capacity to recover when given the right support and opportunities. The project focuses on strengthening livelihoods, improving access to safe water and hygiene services, and promoting peacebuilding and social cohesion. Through climate-smart agriculture, vocational training, rehabilitation of water systems, youth leadership initiatives, peace education, and community-led activities, the initiative empowers communities to restore livelihoods, strengthen local capacities, and foster peaceful coexistence. By combining environmental sustainability, economic recovery, and social cohesion, the project helps communities move beyond survival toward long-term resilience, dignity, and hope for a more stable and peaceful future in Northeast Syria.

Between Work and a Chance to Learn

11-year-old Ozair from a small village in Ghor province began working on the streets at a young age to help support his family after his father left for Iran and never returned. While polishing shoes to earn a small daily income, Ozair longed to attend school like other children. After hearing about the HEMAT Centre, he made the difficult decision to balance work with education. Through the programme, Ozair gained access to learning and health support, giving him hope for a different future and inspiring his dream of becoming a teacher to help children like himself.
